Matisse Museum

Matisse Museum is located in the north of the city of Tanger, near to the Atlantic Ocean. The place is a
cliff very close to a medieval
defensive wall. The Tanger
architecture is characterized by
traditional construction bricks and it
responds to the new museum with
this context by combining Modern
construction techniques with local
materials.
The main objective of the project was
illustrate the footsteps of Matisse
during his travels in Tanger. The development consists of three concrete boxes, each
one associated with a particular way of seeing and the entry of light. The defensive
wall is also included in the development in order to strengthen ties with the city and
its history. The three buildings and the wall are connected by a light steel structure.
The program is multi-functional, including the areas of academic study along with a
library and various workshops. The first building is three stories high and it counts
with two rooms exposure and the main space of the store. This is associated with a
view framed into the city. The second volume, the largest, is two stories high and it
contains the reception areas, a workshop and three exhibition halls. The third volume
is four stories high and contains two exhibition halls, a library and a restaurant. This
building also includes in the basement all energy systems and facilities. The spaces in
this case are associated with a mixture of inner experience and external.
The light steel structure offers a balance of semi-open space with a more closed and
monumental inside experience linked to boxes and concrete wall. The exhibition spaces
are designed to make the best of the different works of Matisse.
